What have been your highlights since graduating?

I've had so many highlights, I've been so lucky!! For me, the main ones would be having my work published nationally, working with top models, getting the chance to be part of makeup teams at high profile fashions shows and assisting some of the makeup artists who inspire me most.

I've also been lucky enough to work behind the scenes on some national TV programmes, been lead artist on a University commercial and I've started working in film as a regular part of my work. Being able to work as a full-time makeup artist so soon after graduating has been a massive highlight for me, too. I never expected to be so busy so quickly, but with the ongoing advice I've received from Sara and all of the tutors at the Academy, I've been able to build a solid client base, and I've really been enjoying building my wedding business too, as it's so different to the other areas I'm working in.

Did you always know what path you wanted to take as a makeup artist?

To be honest, I had no idea how many career paths there were as a makeup artist until I joined the Academy. It was only when hearing about the tutors' varied careers and then chatting with them afterwards about my ambitions for the future that I realised how many opportunities there were in the makeup world. Also, that it was possible to combine whichever paths you were interested in pursuing. It's only been through their advice and being able to work in so many different areas of makeup through the Academy's Aftercare program, that I've been able to start building an even more wide-ranging career than I'd ever dreamed of!!

What made you choose the Academy for your training?

When I made the decision to take training as a makeup artist, I spent a lot of time researching which courses were available. The Academy stood out to me straight away. The tutors are all recognised and greatly admired within the industry, and it was clear that constantly evolving and developing your skills and style was a key part of the philosophy of the Academy, which I think is more important now than ever. Also, nothing else out there compared to the Aftercare program, which I have found invaluable in gaining an amazing range of experience and in getting exposure in so many areas of the industry.

What was your favourite day of your course and why?

I honestly loved every day of the course, but I think I was most inspired by the "Creative" day that Sara taught. She was so passionate about how important it is to find your own style and "start a revolution" rather than just starting a business in makeup. We talked about some of the most influential artists worldwide and how they celebrate their uniqueness through their work. We spent the rest of the day creating no holds barred creative looks with so much encouragement from Sara. That made me realise more than ever what an art form makeup really is, and how important it is to be brave and keep challenging yourself in your work.

What do you love the most about the creative aspect of makeup?

My favourite thing about the creative aspect of makeup is that it really tells a story. Whether you're are literally creating a character on screen using makeup or telling an editorial story in a magazine, the power of makeup speaks for itself. It can take the viewer on a journey that can be understood in any language. For me that's magical. I think it's just as powerful when I do my own clients' makeup. Helping someone create a different look can make them feel instantly happier in themselves, and I feel so lucky to be able to do that as part of my job.

What are your next steps in your journey or where do you want to go with your career?

In the near future, I'm really looking forward to focusing more on TV and film work, which I've been able to work on quite consistently after completing the TV & Film Makeup Course at the Academy. I'm so excited to have been appointed as Makeup Artist on my first feature film, which will begin shooting next year. I also love the creativity of makeup in the fashion world, and I'll be spending much more time focusing on this in the near future, as it's endlessly creative in a totally different way.
